Would the public galleries, contained within a private group, get picked up by Google or other search engines? If they would not get picked up, then this is a really good feature. It would be like the Facebook photo application, where you can give out the direct link to people, but people searching cannot find the photos.

I find people don't seem to mind this type of security, which to be fair isn't really that secure, and as it avoids the need for a password, more people are likely to access it.

Not including a gallery (or any item for that matter) in Public Search is a separate check box under Access Control.

I completely agree that this it not security (as noted in the post), this is mostly for convenience.

Yeah, but how AWESOMELY convenient!  I thought I had figured out all the cool ins-and-outs of your wonderfully versatile access control, but this is a new one on me, and a DAMN USEFUL one.  (As you would probably guess, it opens doors that might not have even occurred to you.)  

The thing I am loving about the gallery versatility (that I haven't found anywhere else) is that it really allows me to tackle and integrate many different challenges in one place and interface.  With this power-user trick, for example, I could easily run a proofs shoot by a customer with no password hassles, and yet also no muddling up of my general public galleries.  

Previously (just yesterday, in fact), I thought I'd need to set up a different account to do that, if I didn't want the different purposes to get mixed up together.

It seems to me that I tried this once, and while the hidden gallery could only be found with the URL, the photos themselves would turn up if someone did a search from my Zenfolio home page, even if Public Search had been disallowed.  I checked with Zenfolio support and they confirmed that was normal.  So be aware of that (or perhaps it's been changed by now, which I think it should be.)

This is indeed a great feature. I used hidden galleries to show private pictures to friends and family while keeping the general public from it. I've even taken it a step further by using collections to only showcase the good photos from those hidden galleries to the public (and thus hiding the gallery link). One minor request is to have the "Photos By:" box removed for photos by me.

So, I send the client the http link, right?  Just wondered if there is a way to make this link smaller.  I'd like to use my domain name followed by the project name.  I know it really doesn't matter, but I'm just trying to make things look tight.

This isn't working for me.  When I send the URL to the person I want to look at the gallery, Zenfolio requires that they are a member and need to sign in.  I don't want everyone I want to see my private gallery to have to sign up on Zenfolio.  That's the opposite of convenient.  Am I doing something to cause Zenfolio to ask for a user name and password?

@ Dennis  Yes, you are definitely doing something to cause this. If you contact Support, they will help you sort this out.

This is not a good solution. Hidden galleries might work for family pictures but not for anyone running a business with client brand images.

I think I would spend $$ to hire a developer to write a higher level of security with access permission levels. There are a lot of really smart folks out there with way too much time to look for opportunities to exploit...

Yes, there is. Follow the two steps outlined in this blog post and you will get exactly that.

I'm new to the site and am not really familiar with the way it works.  

I don't want the public to be able to openly view my photos.  But I do want to be able to link specific photos to various forums with an http:    Exactly how do I do that?

You would create a Private group and place public galleries inside that group. Galleries and photos can be viewed with URLs only, and you can link to any photo or image size.

So I had two questions about this (and one comment).

1) How do you keep these new galleries accessible via the URL from showing up on the homepage's recently added section?

2) I assume it is possible to password lock the galleries pointed to by the URL rather than make them public? The would mean clients would get a url and password, and others would not be able to see these galleries period, right?

Comment: real client only galleries would be a great feature for Zenfolio. In my limited testing, this is the only feature really missing.  Has anyone heard if such a feature is planned and if so when it might show up?

Yes, you can do both.

1) Specify under Access Control not to include these galleries in Recently Added

2) That's exactly how it works.
