    Charging for downloading originals

Is there anyway to charge for downloading an original file? I have a client that wants people to be able to download the files from the site, but if I do that, i will lost a ton of print sales.

Can I set a price to download the original so Im not losing so much money?

     Thanks

Digital download is one of the pending requested features. Not sure when it's going to be available though.

Thats a very unfortunate thing to hear. Would any Zenfolio staff like to chime in here?

Selling digital products is scheduled for the beginning of the next year. Not when the Ball drops in Times Square, but soon thereafter.

it will be nice, but I don't know what to charge... I haven't even come up with a price list for prints yet for customers... haven't sold any.  these first weddings I did, I just included the originals (post-processed) on cd... now I want to start charging, but not exorbitant rates so I have to come up with something fair...  then I'm gonna have to figure out what to charge for downloads as well...  too much for my little tiny head!  :)

if you have paypal, set it up as a custom product. when someone purchases the custom product (digital file) you have to do more work than if zenfolio handled it, but it can happen now.. Just take the payment, when you are notified of the purchase(s) then email the customer the file they purchased.

    Re: Charging for downloading originals

let me ask this of those that are selling downloaded (or emailed) images...

I let my sister download some originals from my site, and she burned them to cd and took them to a local place to get holiday print cards made.  she used a little kiosk thing and paid for the prints/cards.  When she went back to pick them up, they said 'these are wedding shots taken by a paid professional.  you can't have them unless you can show written permission from the photographer allowing you to make prints'.  And I understand that.  When I burn a cd and give to a bride, I include a printed and signed limited use license to make prints.  What about downloads?  How do some of you handle those situations?  or has anyone else run into that situation yet?

most, if not all, pro's would never sell the original. Many people want a digital file for a screen saver or for something like MySpace posting. You only need a lo-res file for these purposes which in turn limits sizes that could be printed.

I've sold these for $5 -$10 depending on end user/.customer. I'd max out download size to that appropriate for an 8x10, add up you sell prices for 8x10's and smaller prints to come up with a download price for this higher res file. if they want a larger print, buy from your site.
