Including option to add watermark to digital downloads

First and foremost, I LOVE the digital downloads and licensing agreements.  Fantastic addition! :)

Is there a possibility to add the option for the owner to mandate a watermark on the digital downloads?  I'd like to offer small web-sized downloads, but with my watermark on it.

     That'd be great.  Thanks!

you could watermark the file before uploading, then only offer the watermarked version of the file for digital downloading...

This is a very reasonable request.

Why would we want to have two versions of each image: one for printing w/o watermark and a special one for the web?  I'm sure it would be very easy for ZF to accomodate us on this one.

I agree - it seems like a simple enough addition!

I've considered watermarking beforehand, but that's just far too much work (and takes up time and resources) to run an action on all the photos to watermark.

I'm just curious as to what you're displaying them in your portfolio in the first place? Is it something with the word PROOF all over the image and when they would order a digital download you want "Bob's photography" in the corner?

    Hi there,

New to Zenfolio. I second this. I'd like to offer the digital download, but with a watermark on it.

    Thanks!

In a perfect world, you would NOT want to have two versions of each image.  But right NOW, the system doesn't support adding watermarks to download image sales.  So if you want to do it NOW, you have to come up with a work-around.  This is just one such possible work-around.

Actually, it maybe not even be necessary to have two versions of each image, depending on how you have setup your other selling.  If you are pre-approving orders, the you could replace the print order with an un-watermarked image.  Many users are replacing images on pre-approval orders with full-resolution images after only uploading a small image for display.  It would be very similar.

Kevin, the OP was not asking how to watermark her digital downloads -- she was asking for a new feature of having ZF apply the watermark.  Do you think this an unreasonable request?  I don't.

No, she wasn't asking how to watermark the file, nor did I tell her how to watermark a file.  But she did say that watermarked digital downloads was something she would like to offer here.  Since we don't have that functionality here yet, and probably wont in the next release since this is the first request I remember seeing for it (and I have read almost every post here), then in the spirit of helping and community, offered up a temporary solution.

I never made a comment on the request itself one way or the other, and looking back at what I wrote, don't see that anyone should have or could have logically inferred that I felt the request was 'unreasonable'.  I honestly dont see myself needing that functionality, but CAN see that others would, so I think it would be a nice 'option' to have here for users.  But if there is something a person wants to accomplish, and the system isn't designed to do it specifically in one particular way we want, it was still designed with enough flexibility that quite often we can find other options to accomplish what we need to do.

My apologies if you mis-read my posts or mis-understood my intentions.

This is a reasonable request, however, it has to be crystal clear to the buyer that the purchased image will contain a watermark. When I'm paying money for a digital photo, my expectation that it will be free of watermarks. Other than that, it should not be very hard for us to have an optional watermark on the digital product level.

Thanks, Vitas.  I agree 100% about the need for clarity.

Kevin, I suggest to you that when people recommend a new ZF feature that you first comment about your views of said recommendation rather than make a condescending suggestion about some work-around, implying that the suggestion is not needed.  You are obviously passionate about ZF so let's focus on helping improve it rather than being a ZF apologist.

Speeder,  zenfolio has no need for anyone to defend them.  And I am not here in that position.

I will 'consider' your suggestion, as I understand there are those here who may not understand my intentions and attitudes towards helping others, but I was not being condescending, and I NEVER implied that the suggestion was not needed.  I also feel I have gone out of my way to show that I am focused on helping improve the Zenfolio experience for all, by both lobbying for new features, and new 'areas' which will be of benefit to many, and also by making suggestions that will help someone accomplish a task they are needing, until the release of a feature that will automate that task for them.

I am sorry you misunderstood my intentions.

I don't know if this was the original request in this post or not, but I would really like the ability to offer digital downloads with watermark at one price and digital downloads at a higher price without watermark without having to upload two different versions of each image.  Is this a feature zenfolio is working on? thanks.

Re: Including option to add watermark to digital downloads

First, I don't think this is an unreasonable request.  I do, however, think that it is more complicated than most think.  Currently, you can have a watermark of your choosing show up on your photos as folks are viewing them.  Zenfolio does not alter your uploaded file, it just uses web coding (which I know nothing about) to overlay a watermark.  Your original file stays as you uploaded it.  For Zenfolio to watermark a file for you, it would have to open the file, add a watermark via some sort of editting program, then resave the file and then allow it to be uploaded, and then delete said file.  That's a lot of stuff going on.

Currently, watermarks are implemented to protect our images from piracy.  By selling digital downloads, I would think that the image would be watermark free because by paying for it, I am not a pirate.  If it had a watermark, why would I buy it?  What would be the point?
