Here are two flowers photos from my galleries. The first one is the most popular on my site and is in the top 100 of the most popular photos on Zenfolio.

 I like the first pic, the detail is good...altho the crop is too tight, the flower needs a bit more breathing  room - it feels kinda cramped.

The second shot I don't care for much...simply because there isn't any one particular area that is steller-sharp to draw the eye in. The entire frame is soft to blurry.

After 40 years of photographing flowers, I'm not a huge fan of macro florals anyways...(unless there is an extremely clear/detailed interesting region to grab one's attention)...as it is essentually a very unatural viewing experience.

Just MY 2 shekels worth.

 Cool, thanks for the critique. I wasn't looking for one but that's OK. I like macro florals and see them as abstracts...(I like them and that's all that really matters, lol.)

PS - It's funny, I just had a look at your flora images and they aren't my cup of tea at all. I find the black background 'very unnatural' like you say. To each their own though, they are nice, just not to my taste.

PPS - I see you are from Victoria (where I was born and raised). Good to see a local photograper here, I am in Coquitlam now and miss being on the island a lot. One day I'll be back...

 Well, those are studio designer florals...and obviously not intended to be 'purist' in nature.

 With my regular, outdoor flower shots...I always keep it to a natural view.

However, with regard to macro (regardless of personal taste) there are certain rules of composition and  image quality that apply. I'm always rather confused when folks upload pics that have no sharp-in focus attention point.
