Might I add that ACDSee Pro is the software of choice for Thompson Digital Image! ok, hype aside... it is what I have been using for post-processing of photos for a couple of years now. I find it has a very nice workflow to it... I can process photos much more quickly than I am able to with Photoshop. I can NOT compare it to LightRoom however. LR is something I've downloaded and tried, but never used enough to get used to it. I always found myself going back to ACDSee Pro.
ACDSee Pro also has some functions in it that I feel are much better than like functions in Photoshop. The advanced mode of shadow tool is something I will never be able to do without now. Much better than anyone else's I've found. Some of the new changes to tools in version 3 look to be fantastic as well, such as the improved color adjustments.
I'm not trying to sell for ACDSee here, and it is not without it's problems, but for Pro2, I paid about $129.00, which is a huge savings over the cost of photoshop. Sure it doesn't do layering or any number of other functions photoshop offers, but for basic photo post-processing, if you are on a budget, it is well worth a look. You can download the current v2.5 for a 30 day free trial, or download the beta version 3.0. But remember, with the beta, back up your originals before you start working on them. No guarantees on beta software! (of course, backing up originals before post processing is a good idea no matter what you are doing!)
