Why make the difference between galleries and groups?

Galleries can only hold photos. Groups can only hold galleries and collections.

So it is not possible to have galleries inside other galleries. And it is not possible to have photos directly next to a gallery.

Why not be able to have photos and galleries inside other galleries and just forget about the groups?!?

Can someone explain this to me...?

    Best regards,

    Georg

Is it just a naming issue?  It's just a structure to contain different things.  You could think of a group as a filing cabinet and galleries as folders.  Put the photos in the folder instead of in the bottom of the drawer. It looks cleaner to have things seperated out and easier to find.

What you are suggesting, having 'photos' and 'gallery links' next to each other would work on the gallery page, where you are viewing all the photos in the gallery, but then when you clicked into the photo page view, it would not work to have a gallery link in there.

And really, your 'gallery' should be a set of a certain grouping of photos.  It would really be extremely abstract (my opinion) to have a new set of different photos mixed into an existing set of photos.  As it is setup now, a gallery is, and should be (again, my opinion), the end-point of an orderly hierarchy.

I'm coming from PBase and to my surprise finding more and more that it has some basic features (custom per gallery CSS for example) that mighty slick Zenfolio and SmugMug actually lack or have it in some overcomplicated and restricted manner.

Here's another one. In PBase each Gallery can contain standalone photos and other nested galleries. There's no limit on nesting as far as I know. Moreover you can upload, copy or link (so no storage is wasted) nested galleries and photos into hosting gallery. Nested galleries are treated in the same way as photos - you can order them, assign keywords, etc. All this individually or in batch. Very simple and flexible system, IMO.

Granted PBase lacks many more other big guy's features (mostly in sales support since it's geared mostly towards amateurs like me) not speaking of visual finesse, speed, stability and support. Still there's a thing or two that Zen and Smug can learn from PB :)

Just a lazy amateur. Checking out Zenfolio.

Re: Why make the difference between galleries and groups?

Maybe it's done to avoid confusion.  I suspect that's also the reason for the distinction between collections and galleries.  I personally feel having photos next to galleries is a poor design choice, but that's obviously a taste thing.  It either looks bad because of the different types of thumbnails mixed together or, in the case of Pbase, it's confusing for the visitor because there's not a clear visual distinction between a gallery thumbnail and a photo thumbnail.

Having said all that, you might as well ask for it in the feature request section if it's important to you.

Re: Why make the difference between galleries and groups?

This is an organized system for people with lots of images.

Here's how it works for me.

My groups are sports, weddings and portraits.

Click on sports. inside this GROUP are two groups; football and horseshows.

click on horse shows. Inside this GROUP are 3 GROUPS; fairfied horse show, manchester horse show and Ridge horse show.

Click on the ridge horse show and there are GALLERIES.... beginner jumper, adult jumper and open jumper.

look at the  500 photos. See pictures of you riding? put them in a COLLECTION and send the url to Dad's office telling him these are the ones he needs to buy for you.

A Group is like a folder on your computer. You can put a computer folder inside another folder...  THE ADVANTAGE OF GROUPS IS  you can have different rules for each group. So my price list for horse shows are not the same as portraits or football.. ..... nor is my access. I can make the football open to the public and close portraits to only those with a password.

A GALLERY is the place that holds the individual image files. (such as "beginning jumpers" or "open jumpers".  All you images should be uploaded to Galleries. Then you put the galleries into groups (even if it's a group titled miscellanous shots or my favorites)..

A COLLECTION is mainly for the customer to sort out there images from the Gallery.
