    Custom Domain

When I go to PREFERENCES it states this:
    ____________________________________________

    Custom Domain

If you have your own domain name registered, you can configure it to become the address to your Home page and all your photographs.

Configuring your own custom domain is a two step process:

    1. You need to setup the CNAME record at the place where you registered and host your domain. Examples of such registrars are Network Solutions, Go Daddy, Register.com, Yahoo, etc. Check with your registrar for the exact procedure but it usually involves editing DNS configuration and pointing or aliasing a subdomain to zenfolio.com.

For example, to point photos.yourdomain.com to zenfolio.com, you need to create the following CNAME record in yourdomain.com:

      photos CNAME zenfolio.com.

NOTE: there should be no www in zenfolio.com.

If you want your entire domain to go to your Zenfolio pages, you would need to create an A record pointing to our current IP address:

      @ A 64.62.158.18
    2. Once you have the CNAME configured with your registrar, you need to give us your domain name below and save it as a preference.

The entire process may take up to 48 hours to propagate everywhere, so please be patient.

TIP: If you would like for both yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.com to go to your Zenfolio pages, you need to setup both an A record and a CNAME record, but only www.yourdomain.com needs to be entered below. Once you do that, Zenfolio will automatically recognize yourdomain.com as a legitimate address as well.

Please forgive me but I can't seem to get this to work.  Can someone dumb this down for me?  I have my own domain name, ratch.net and would like to have a subdirectory (which I have already created) to point to my zen page.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Chris,

Subdirectories cannot be mapped. Subdomains can. So in other words http://ratch.net/gallery cannot be mapped but http://gallery.ratch.net can. The closes you coud get to your desired result is to redirect any requests to http://ratch.net/gallery to http://appstate98.zenfolio.com. I did the subdomain mapping (galleries.yoorek.com) and it works great.

    Hope this helps

How long does it take to go in effect?  It said it could take 48 hrs.  Is that accurate?

Also, I created photos.ratch.net.  How do I get my zen page to go to that?

    Hi,

I assume that you have created photos.ratch.net at your DNS provider (I am with dyndns myself) . You can check it yourself using nslookup under windows. Just type nslookup photos.ratch.net and check the output. I just checked it myself and it seems that is hasn't been propagated yet.

What you are after is the following output. -

    > nslookup galleries.yoorek.com
    Server:  xxxxxxxxx.com
    Address:  xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name:    zenfolio.com
    Address:  64.62.158.18
    Aliases:  galleries.yoorek.com

When I check your address I get something else (i.e. no mention of zenfolio.com)

    > nslookup photos.ratch.net
    Server:
    xxxxxxxxx.com
    Address:  xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name:    ratch.net
    Address:  66.226.64.12
    Aliases:  photos.ratch.net

    > nslookup ratch.net
    Server:
    xxxxxxxxx.com
    Address:  xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name:    ratch.net
    Address:  66.226.64.12

As a matter of fact the two addresses are the same. This indicates to me that the alias has not been propagated yet. As far as the delay is concerned, yes it could take up to 48 hours. Usually less. Just to make sure that you are not waiting in vane, could you tell me how you configured photos.ratch.net?

Additional comment: I have tried to look up xxx.ratch.net and got the answer as well. It indicates to me that you have the 'wildcard' option set that maps any subdomain to your ratch.net domain.

    Re: Custom Domain

    Hi appstate98,

Got back home from work, checked the photos.ratch.net and -- it works (sort of). nslookup  reports same IP address as zenfolio.com. That's a good start. All you have to do now is to login to your zenfolio account, go to preferences, custom domain and check 'enable custom domain' checkbox. Then in 'domain name' field enter photos.ratch.net then click on 'Test DNS Setup' button followed by a click on 'Save' button. Then you should be OK. BTW this feature is available to 'Unlimited' accounts.

    Re: Custom Domain

Thanks for this whole thread/discussion. It's been helpful for me, too.

I think I just did everything right on the first try, thanks to all notes above. But it'll take a few hours to verify. But I can wait with confidence, thanks again.

    Re: Custom Domain

Now, I have and had read this thread forward and back and still could not get it to work. I attribute that to my age and being somewhat computer illerterate. With the help of the support staff they finally got me  so my domain name works problem is you have to use the www.for example www.dunningtonphoto.com works dunningtonphoto.com does not and I would like it to work if possible. My domain is registered at godaddy.com and if needed I do have a screen shot of the setting at godaddy. So if anyone can give me a poke as to how to make it work it surely would be appreciated.

Too many years with a camera in my hands meant never really learning the nessesary computer information.

    Re: Custom Domain

    Hi Property1:

Out of curiosity, what did you do to make it work? I'm using a solution to map both sherwoodimagery.com and www.sherwoodimagery.com to my Zenfolio gallery, but I'm not sure it's the best way.

    Thanks!

    Re: Custom Domain

I did not figure it out myself, I happened upon this site http://wiki.smugmug.com/display/SmugMug/GoDaddy+CNAME+Setup and followed it replace smugmug with zenfolio and the zenfolio ip adress and it worked

Thanks for sharing that. All of the above directions confused me too.

Funny we have to go to Zenfolios biggest competitor to get answers to our questions!

    Re: Custom Domain

I, too, am frustrating. Starting to feel like when I started playing with basic html code a few years ago. Argh!
    ------
Goal: Direct my domain name www.el310.com (and el310.com) to my Zenfolio pages: www.elcom.zenfolio.com.
    ------
Have tried several options: here's my latest config, which doesn't work any better than previous tries:
    -----
    A-Record
    Host, or (Sub-)Domain: www.64.62.158.18.elcom
    Target, or IP-Address: 64.62.158.16
    -----
    CName-Record
    Host: www.el310.com
    Target: www.310el.zenfolio.com
    -----
    Thanks for any help,
    Eric Lassiter
