Name on Photos

This is more of a curious question as to who does what and what clients like.

All this time I have put "Crystal Wightman Photography" in the corner of all my photos. So when the photo is printed, so is my name. Zen offers printing of name on the back of the photos.

So I am wondering, should I not have my name on the photo, just include it on the back? Or should I keep it on the photo?

What do you do? What do your clients prefer?

I shoot a little bit of everything.. landscape, animals, and potraits etc.. So would it be ok to have my name on a print that will be framed in someone's house/office. Or do customer's find the name on a framed print annoying.

Part of me, wants my name on the print, then whoever looks at the photo, knows who took it. The other part of me feels, maybe a customer won't buy the print knowing the photographer's name is there.

No charge to me if I offer complimentary downloads, right?

I added a complimentary download gallery for a customer who placed an order, because I wanted to retouch the purchased images for her. I'm only charged on profits, right? So the customer can download as many complimentary images as she wants without me being charged again?

zenfolio print service quality for pros (as compared to say, smugmug)

I'm a working photographer (wedding, events, portraits). My galleries have been hosted at SmugMug for several years. SmugMug has many strengths and to be honest, I have continued to recommend it to others; but I'm here taking a close look at zenfolio, because I like the look of zenfolio and like the ease with which I can organize my photos. Haven't made my mind up yet but I'm considering a change.

Anyway, a key issue for me - perhaps THE key remaining issue - is the quality of the printing. I can see that zenfolio seems to offer me the same pre-printing and ordering controls that smugmug does - ability to set my own prices, right-click protection, watermarking, delay of N days prior to fulfillment so I can upload high-res files, and so on. But the proof is in the pudding and what matters to me is the quality of the prints themselves. SmugMug now offers fulfillment through Bay Photo and the print quality is excellent. With Bay Photo I'm getting prints on good paper, with hand color correction really well done, just a nice experience overall. My impression is that Mpix, while good and reliable, may not be quite in Bay Photo's league. I think I read that Mpix is the consumer/prosumer affiliate of a large pro lab, which makes me a little nervous. I also read some info at SmugMug, where they explained why they picked Bay Photo and not Mpix.

But I'm keeping an open mind. I've placed an order through my trial account here at zenfolio and am looking forward to receiving it. And I noticed somewhere today that the irrepressible Scott Kelby was touting Mpix. I'm trying not to hold that against Mpix. :-)

So, those of you who are wedding pros or pro portrait shooters selling prints to paying clients, what do you think of the prints you're getting through zenfolio? What do your clients think? p.s. I've also been looking at Instaproofs, because they would let me pick any print lab I want - but that appears to be an extra hassle that I would prefer to avoid. I think I saw something here about zenfolio allowing a possibility for "self fulfillment". What's that? I mean, would it be possible to use zenfolio to let clients proof photos and place orders and then use a back-end account with a lab of my choice to actually get the prints made?

Upset, ok, sure. That's all I dared say online here from all the emotional words that are really running through my head right now.

A website customer of mine (I do photography, webdesign, and computer maintenance) purchased a new Million-Dollar plus multi-axis laser cutting and welding center... only one of it's kind in this area of the country. Amazing piece of equipment (see it in action).

The laser manufacturer wanted to feature the machine in an article (print and online magazine format) and so I graciously (I know I know) allowed the use of two photos I had taken for no-charge for the article. Use was with the understanding that photos were copyrighted Thompson Digital Image, for use in this article only, and use required the notice "Photos provided by ThompsonDigitalImage.com".

No problem.

Until the article came out and there was no credit given.

Contacted the laser manufacturer, they verified that the publisher had been given the requirement, contacted the publisher who apologized and agreed to correct the online version immediately, and re-print the photos in the next issue of the magazine, with credit and an 'apology'. Being the easy-going nice guy that I am (I know I know) I said that was fine.

So now we are half way plus thru November, I assume anyone reading the article would have read it by now, and I checked today and found the online article was never changed as the publisher said they would. Another oversight?

Now the online article was a pdf article, but in searching for contact info tonight, I found a 'text version' of the article as well. And this one, you can click the pictures for an 'enlarged view'.

now check the article and then check the enlarged view of the photos and tell me, am I over-reacting or does the logo with the photos (not MY logo) look like they own the photos?

I put a call into the senior marketing rep that I dealt with on this, and she is going to talk with the publisher in the morning... just right now looking for anyone's thoughts on this situation.

all I really wanted was to help out my customer, and to get my domain out in front of the eyes of many potential customers. it all seemed so straight-forward and easy...

Zenfolio iPhone App?

Apple just pushed out the new version of the iTunes which includes the new iPhone App Store. I was perusing through the available applications and noticed that there was a mobile Flickr app, a SmugMug (SmugShot) app, Photobucket app, among others.

Any word on a Zenfolio app? (Either developed by the fine folks at Zenfolio, or third party using the API?)

I am new to Zenfolio but very happy with my experience so far. Is it possible to put a copyright symbol and my name on my pictures after they have been added to my Zenfolio website or does this need to be done before I upload my photos. If it is possible, what is the best way of doing this? I don't want this as a watermark (which I know you can do in Zenfolio) but as something that will print with the picture once someone orders it.

Moisture on prints in bags

I order prints through MPIX and my ZF account. I had an issue with moisture on the prints when the sun hit the bags at an art fair. Do any of you do anything to your prints to prevent this from damaging your prints?

Keywords and photo titles

Not to be ignored if you want the hits , if you add a good description to your photos and to your pages , then submit the RSS file to a RSS submitter as i have done then your are ok for top positions on the search engines , eg go to Google and type in sion mills photos , then see my site come up near first , then click on the cache and see what Google has indexed from my site , this is the easiest way to get noticed until Zenfolio lets us Verify our site on Google , posted about this before to try and help other people , but was ignored , who cares , just me here trying to be helpful .....take it or leave it !!......Joe

Zenfolio for business only?

I am thinking about using zenfolio to host my snapshots of family and friends but it would appear that it is more geared towards people who are selling their photographs for profit. So I am wondering if zenfolio is a bad choice for me? I am going to use mpix regardless of what image host I use which is why I am looking at zenfolio in the first place.

In the customer view page there is a slide show button and then a beautiful flash full screen slide show comes in.

I like to know if there a way to link customer directly to it.

is seem like the page don't have it own Address.

Desktop Upload program

Had problems this way and had to reformat my PC twice and start over again.

Lost my uploader for my site.

Was on the 14 day trial but I paid for a Unlimited account a few hours ago via Paypal + I sent an Email to Zenfolio.

Where do I get the Uploader from in order to upload my images.

Quality of resized images

When I look at the resized images displayed on my Zenfolio and compare it with the same images resized using Photoshop (or even Flickr) the quality just doesn't match up. For some reason the images displayed in Zenfolio appear softer and overall less appealing. It seems to me that Zenfolio either compressed the images too much, or has a poor resizing algorithm, or both.

Here is an example of a detail of a picture. The original was uploaded both on Zenfolio and Flickr. I then screen captured the results on both Zenfolio and Flickr from the same browser, cropped a small interesting area in Photoshop, and put the two side to side.

The two are not exactly the same size because Zenfolio and Flickr provide two different sizes. This is only an example, but the difference in quality is noticeable no matter what you do. Try with any image, and you'll see.

Selling rights to photos

Hey,
I recently shot an event for two publications I work with (one was paid work though this isn't an issue) and the organizers of the event are interested in purchasing the rights to some of my photographs for future use in their own promotion of themselves/events. This is a not-for-profit organization I support, however they do have a very large budget and may be using the photographs on websites, flyers and what not that would be distributed across the province/country. I'm not sure what to charge for use of the photographs as I haven't really given rights to use to an organization with a real budget before. They're looking for a quote on both a per photo basis and for access to the whole bunch (32 photos). Any ideas?

German sales tax (deutsche Umsatzsteuer)

Hello, I've seen that some other German photographers have joined the Zenfolio service. Did anyone of you already check how far the sales via Zenfolio (I only mean the selling of downloadable products) are duty for German sales tax (umsatzsteuerpflichtig)? I'm not really sure cause the servers are located in the USA and the act of selling is also done in the USA, so there might be no duty in Germany for sales tax, but I'm not sure as I mentioned. Hope anyone can tell me.

Embed a slideshow on Facebook for Dummies

I've seen this discussed in a few threads but cannot figure out what bits of the ZF embedded SS code go where and how to fill out the info the apps request on Facebook.

I've tried FBML and http://apps.facebook.com/flashembed with no success, although the latter looks more promising.

Flash Embed asks for <object> tags - do I add them and place the <embed type =" etc.> stuff in between?

It also asks for the URL - how do I find just that among all the EMBED code?

Where does the SS go? Can it be moved, resized etc?

Does anyone have a simple guide for dissecting the ZF SS code and getting it working onto a Facebook page? (Which BTW, Facebook has the worlds worst UI - I can't understand why it's so popular?)

Photo Price List

I have four price lists for photos. when I am in the gallery and want to assign a price list I am unable to read all of them. I can only see three and just the top of the next list. There is not scroll down.

Is there a limit to how many price lists you can have? or a way to correct this?
