    Email Invitations

There are some great enhancement suggestions here in this forum.

I would like to add one by requesting a feature allowing us to create and maintain simple email distribution lists for invitations. Simple idea, big time saver!

    Thanks.

Hi Peter -- it must be a Portland thing... I made that same suggestion to the dev team about a year ago!  I think its a great idea and would make my life a lot easier.  I also suggested having an address book, so I could just put a check mark next to the people to whom I wanted to send a link to the images.

Funny! It must be a PDX thing :) I really like your idea with the address book. I also emailed the ZF team when I first signed up. They responded by saying it's on their "TODO" list. A year seems like a long time integrate such a simple function as this. Perhaps if more people express interest on this topic the developers may expedite this request.

    Re: Email Invitations

Can anyone out there speculate as to why integrating a simple email address book to this site would not be a good idea? I image the good folks at ZF have a good reason not make this a priority...

    Any thoughts?...

    Re: Email Invitations

It is a very good idea to have an Address Book capable of saving distribution lists. We have all the intentions of making that happen.

We do feel that as long as there is a workaround, which is saving a list of e-mails in a text file and using copy/paste when needed, this is not a high priority item and has to wait for higher priority items such as the Comments.

Love the email idea.  Great to invite people to see your gallery.  Even better would be to allow those viewers to then sign up to get updates when you had new galleries, etc.

    Re: Email Invitations

Well, it's been over a year now, and still no indication that this may happen.

Seems we're seriously lagging behind some of the other photo sites.
Simple contact list? Geo-tagging? Customizable themes? ....

    Any new thoughts?

    Re: Email Invitations

I'm sure that since the same workaround exists (see the comment from March 18, 2008) there isn't much pressure to do it.

Personally, I find the "but there is a workaround so we don't prioritize your request" response to be a bit condescending -- especially when it's something that seems relatively easy to do and it's been requested for well over two years.  But perhaps it is more complex than it appears.  Or maybe it's just the disgruntled few in Portland who want this :-)

    Re: Email Invitations

This feature is on our list and we will get to it at some point. Being a small company we have to be wise about prioritizing our work, making sure that the most important things get done first. Also, our philosophy is to do things right, instead of releasing quick patches. That's why features that look simple on the surface typically require more time to implement.

    Re: Email Invitations

Thanks Vitas, although the lack of enthusiasm and the "we will get to it at some point" certainly makes me think I will be back again in a year asking for this feature.

As for the second part of your post, are you saying you've been working on this feature for over 2 1/2 years?  Or were you just supplying general information that simple features usually take a long time implement?

    Re: Email Invitations

No, we have not been working on this feature, even though we had it in mind all the time. What I'm saying is that we have to periodically reshuffle our work in order to deliver more important features sooner. A lot of thinking goes into selecting the features for each release: customer feedback, competition, service availability and performance, estimates from engineers, and so on.

There's a family of CRM (customer relationship management) features requested by our customers which include maintaining e-mail lists, follow ups, registration, leads, referrals, promotions management, etc. We will address them step by step, while staying focused on our core competencies.

Wouldn't it be better to access the Outlook Contacts or Windows contact lists and pick from there? That would be my vote.

An import wizard, for all common desktop e-mail apps, would surely be nice. Tying the site in anyway to a specific operating system would be a mistake, in my opinion.
