Hi. Has anyone else had problems in the last couple of days with a slow site? On occasions seems to be struggling to open thumbnails in galleries. They do eventually open but slower than normal.

I have checked the speed of the service provider and it is ok.

    Re: Slow site

For me, the galleries seem to get stuck on an occasional image. If you move forward beyond that image the next image displays properly. If you return to the problem image, it still hangs. Providing examples.

Scenario 1 - This public gallery contains images I recently copied over from a private gallery. I waited over a minute moving left to right from image 34 to 35 in the gallery and nothing displayed, just ants. Then jumped to the next image 36 which displayed quickly and then jumped back to image 35, It was another minute before the image finally displayed.

Scenario 2 - I had replaced the watermark in the images in this gallery. Only 7 images in the gallery so I wouldn't expect a large delay in updating the system for the new watermarked images. In this case experienced over minute delay in viewing Image 5, left to right from Image 4 and then right to left from image 6

    Re: Slow site

I was just about to post the same thing!

For me, I find the front end (what clients see) fairly snappy. Though I have noticed the issues mentioned with pausing on an image in the slideshow.

The back end, what we see, seems to be a bit laggy. Galleries have a little pause before they begin to show. Rather than an issue with loading millions of photos, I could have created a gallery with no images in it and it will still have the kind of pause that makes you wonder what's wrong. For me, the pause before any images are shown is about 3 seconds each time after clicking on the gallery.

When I'm in the gallery, most things seem relatively fine. Not the fastest. But not laggy.

The last few days,  I'm having - again - this same problem.

The photos and galleries simply do not load.

    This is getting tiresome!

I see the same thing happen a lot.   The two most common that I see are

    1) It loads all the text on the page but doesn't display the images

    2) It loads some of the thumbnails but leaves "holes", e.g., thumbnails that are stuck "waiting on zenfolio"

    Do contact Zenfolio support.

They solved my problem and your description fits perfectly with what I saw.

    Regards.

They were not able to do anything to fix it for me or for my customers that are also seeing it.   How did they fix it for you?

    Re: Slow site

From the reply of Zenfolio support:

We think the problem might’ve be caused by the router. Whenever a Zenfolio page is opend, the page tries to load all images from the page and thus creates a number of simultaneous HTTP connections. Unfortunately the router is configured to consider 10 or more simultaneous HTTP connections coming from his browser as a Denial of Service attack.

We did adjust our server configuration to mitigate such cases, however you may adjust your router’s settings so in the future the chances of similar problems would be smaller.

They suggested you change "Maximum incomplete TCP/UDP sessions number to same host" in “DoS Detect Criteria” from 10 to 50.

    Re: Slow site

If I'm reading what they said correctly, they are saying that every end user has to change a parameter in their local routers to get rid of this problem?   If so, that's BS.    I was previously using SmugMug and it can reliably display thumbnails 28 at a time, along with all the other image graphics that are also on the page.   I just did a side-by-side comparison of some SmugMug galleries with some Zenfolio galleries, and the SmugMug thumbnails consistently display a lot faster and without any "holes", whereas with ZenFolio you can watch the thunbmails being displayed one or two at a time and sometimes it doesn't show all of them.

Overall I really like ZenFolio's photographer interface a lot better than SmugMug, but much as I hate to say it, I think SmugMug has Zenfolio beat hands down for the end user (e.g., the customer/buyer) experience.

No,  they did not say that:

    Re: Slow site

The change on our servers should be sufficient to address one specific cause of the described issue. However, there could be other factors which affect how thumbnails or pages are loaded. If you are still having a consistent issue please contact our support.
