How do you sign your products ?

    Hi,

I traditionnally sign my photos on the mat, with a light pencil, with the title of the photograph. It works when I take charge of the framing myself. However, for e-commerce, things are quite different, especially for those who buy original digital files or framed prints delivered via MPix. Consequently, I do have the following questions:

    a) where do you sign ?

    b) do you adopt the same solution for every product (digital file, MPix framed photos)

    c) how do you deal with the potential to crop your photos ?

    d) What do you include ?  (content: signature + title + place + ???)

    e) how do you sign ? (size, color, etc.)

    Thanks !

I was hoping that others would chime in here. Here is my $0.02 for what it is worth. Big Smile

    a) I prefer not to sign my work because I feel that it detracts from the viewing experience. If I do sign a series of prints I physically sign the mat, just below the image with a very fine tip pen.

    b) For digital products I have the peace of mind of the license agreement as well as my copyright so I do not sign the image unless requested.

    c) I let the customers do their best and then tweak the crop if necessary during order approval. If needed I will upload an image that I have adjusted in Photoshop to better suit the print size.

    d) The title of the work, my name and a series number.

    e) As small as is legible to not detract from the image.

I hope this is helpful. Does anyone else have any input? Smile

     Thanks Laura,

Insofar, I've signed on the mat (light pencil, small signature + title + place if necessary) when I sold with a mat.

When I sold only  the photo, I signed + title with a permanent ink, as small as possible (sometimes people didn't notice it at all and asked me for the title...). I also rewrite the title in the back in a larger font.

I've not sold digital files insofar.

Question: how do you keep track of series numbers ? there are several medium used for a same photo: print yourself, print via Zenfolio/MPix, download digital... Do you start a new series for each media or maintain a unique series of numbers ?

Thanks a lot, I started to think my question was of no interest...

Glad to see this post ... I was dealing with the same issues and wondering how to handle it.  I now think that I will not digitally sign my photos and save that for the 'in person' experience/added value.  :)  Maybe, someday, someone would like my autograph.  haha

For gallery shows I do print editions that are not available online in the same way. I do one edition of say 10 prints and whatever doesn't sell during the show I offer as custom products through Zenfolio. Right now I am selling mounted 24x36 prints of my Kama Sutra series if anyone is interested. Shameless plug! Stick out tongue

LLaura, you do have lovely work displayed on your gallery... and I know it's only been a relatively short time since you've had your Zen gallery, I was wondering if you've yet made any sales yourself through your Zen site?  Wink
